Books Not Bars Youth Arts and Culture Program

Total Award: $75,000 over 1 year

To support Books Not Bars Youth Arts and Culture Program, an initiative that creates opportunities for young people to represent their unique experiences while using art to work towards systemic change. The Ella Baker Center (EBC) is an internationally-recognized community-based organization that challenges human rights abuses in the United States criminal justice system. EBC is committed to supporting youth leadership development projects in key communities that are most affected by the problems of institutional racism and poverty. In 2003-2004, EBC and the Books Not Bars Youth Arts and Culture Program conducted a Sane Budget Campaign that included workshops, tours and the development of educational materials. Its Alternative Youth Campaign continued to use the arts to educate citizens and policymakers about ineffective and inhumane youth rehabilitation centers. In 2004-2005 EBC will complete editing its documentary; lead training workshops; expand its communications network, provide technical assistance to youth leaders; organize cultural events; collaborate with others to convene town hall meetings; and engage in mobilizing youth.
