Bridges

Total Award: $75,000 over 1 year

To support Bridges, a series of performances, events, panels and workshops designed to create passageways across art forms, cultures, aesthetics, classes, borders and traditions. Pangea World Theater was founded with a vision of bringing people from different backgrounds and traditions together through theater. Pangea inspires new forms of artistic expression through a commingling of art forms and cultures; fosters new collaborations among diverse artists; encourages artists to take risks in their work; sparks the creation of new works that address issues of race and culture and creates bridges of understanding for audiences. This program will be designed and produced by artists from immigrant and minority communities across the Midwest who use art as a means of gaining a voice in arenas where there is limited or no access for their work. In 2003-2004, Pangea engaged in a collaborative community process that led to the development of three multi-disciplinary performances. One was performed in 2004. In 2004-2005, they propose to fully develop, perform and travel two performances, Cactus in the Desert, a play that investigates science, morality and spirit and The Laughing Pomegranates a play that deals with affirming struggle with humor and beauty from a non-western perspective. Pangea will also evaluate the process for developing each project; develop a diverse audience for the series; encourage outreach and education to the broader community and develop an effective communications strategy.
