Let Freedom Swing
Total Award: $100,000 over 1 year
Presidential Authority Grant
To support Let Freedom Swing, a project that explores the relationship between jazz, freedom and democracy by commissioning prominent composers to write new compositions in honor of six champions of human rights. Let Freedom Swing will celebrate the democratic essence of jazz and its role as a universal ambassador for tolerance and freedom. This program will feature works written by leading composers that honor human rights advocates: Martin Luther King, Jr., Robert Francis Kennedy, Nelson Mandela, Lyndon Baines Johnson, Eleanor Roosevelt and Vaclav Havel. The music will be performed in tandem with the spoken word recitation of notable speeches and writings by these leaders. The speeches will be read by well-known actors and public figures. The concert will be recorded and nationally broadcast on the radio; programming will be developed for school-aged youth; and the works will be included in the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra's touring repertoire.
