New Village Press-Works of HeART
Total Award: $50,000 over 1 year
To support New Village Press-Works of HeART, a series of photographically illustrated books documenting effective responses to social and economic problems in communities that are appropriate for researchers, policymakers and the lay public. The New Village Press is a project of Architects/Designers/Planners for social Responsibility (ADPSR). ADPSR works for peace, environmental protection, ecological building, social justice and healthy communities. The press operates from the premise that communities are healed through the insertion of positive alternatives to what's not working; and/or through the building of neighborhood assets and social capital. Residents of communities in decline want the particulars of how other people have turned around their distressed neighborhoods and hundreds of successful citizen initiated programs are not documented because those involved have no time, training or budget to do so. This book series will address this need. ADPSR will publish volume 1 and research volume 2 -- both will each include one or two essays and 10-12 project profiles; target local community development organizations as an audience; assist individuals and groups who want to use the research as a tool for activism; develop an effective marketing plan; facilitate the reprinting of articles for groups interested in sustainable communities; and promote the use of the books as classroom text in high schools and universities.
