Presidential Authority Grant
To provide general operating support for THE THING, Inc., an organization committed to the development of new media culture, information technology and social activism. THE THING is a social network, made up of individuals from diverse backgrounds with a wide range of expert knowledge. Its activities include hosting artists' projects, publishing cultural criticism, organizing events and symposia on such topics as the state of new media arts, intellectual property, on-line privacy, artistic innovations in robotics as well as the possibilities of community empowerment through wireless technologies. Over the course of the past two years, THE THING has created THING.Residency, an international residency program that includes a roster of artists from the US and abroad; and THING.FM an open micro-broadcast FM radio network that has showcased the work of audio artists. In 2004 they will implement THING.Cloud, a free public wireless computer network. NCF support will go towards stabilizing this organization that supports the work of techno-artists in the United States and abroad.
