Community Visions, Documentary History Project, and Precious Places and NAMAC 2005

Total Award: $75,000 over 1 year

To support Community Visions, Documentary History Project, and Precious Places, core organizational programs that assist youth, independent media makers and community organizations making issue-focused media in a tri-state area. Scribe Video is an arts education center where independent producers, emerging video makers, members of the community and neighborhood groups and individuals work together to document their visions and concerns. Scribe makes a concerted effort to reach out to people of color, young people with limited financial resources and the elderly to present programs which will engage those with limited exposure to diverse forms of media. In 2003-2004, Scribe created media with four new Community Visions productions partners; worked with youth to produce videos that documented local history; and implemented a new initiative that resulted in media about public spaces and buildings that hold community memories. In 2004-2005, Scribe will use media to teach documentary storytelling; collaborate with community groups to document issues and problems; present screening and special events that showcase media arts articulating community concerns; work with young media makers documenting community life from an historical perspective; and support the work of the local consortia that is hosting the 25th annual National Association of Media Arts Centers meeting in Philadelphia.
