Alternate Roots, Inc. (Atlanta, GA)
General Support
Total Award: $100,000 over 1 year
To support Alternate Roots, an organization based in the Southeast whose mission is to support the creation and presentation of original performing and visual art that is rooted in a particular community of place, tradition or spirit. Roots is committed to social and economic justice and the protection of the natural world. Artists and cultural workers making positive contributions to develop communities at the intersection of arts and activism are rarely valued for the impact they make. Alternate Roots works to end this isolation by building partnerships and connections among artists and by supporting the exchange of information, ideas and formal practice. In 2003-2004, Roots provided networking opportunities for members; nurtured the development of new community projects; brokered arts/community partnerships; increased the skills of member artists; developed strategies for promoting the work and the community issues beyond the region and maintained an organization where members are engaged and involved. In 2004-2005, Roots will continue to support a strong communications strategy and networking opportunities; the creation of new collaborative works, opportunities for peer-to-peer mentoring where artists engage in a critical response process and continue to maintain an inclusive broad-based organization.
