Smart Museum of Art/Dawoud Bey: the Chicago Project

The lives of a diverse group of teenagers from Chicago's South Side will be the focus of this extended educational program, artist residency and exhibition, led by Dawoud Bey, the renowned photographer and recent Guggenheim fellowship recipient, working in collaboration with Dan Collison, an award-winning producer of radio and film documentaries, Smart Museum education and curatorial staff, and University of Chicago faculty members. The project will begin in fall 2002, and will include weekly seminar meetings and workshops. It will continue with an exhibition in spring 2003 of Bey's photographs of the young participants, accompanied by Collision's "audio portraits"; and documentation of this model project through a publication to be distributed by the University of Chicago Press in summer 2003.
