Environmental Justice Project

Segregated communities of color across the United States bear a disproportionate burden of environmental hazards--and consequently often suffer higher than average rates of birth defects, cancers, other diseases, and even premature death. A goal of Lawyers' Committee for civil Rights Under LAw is to protect these communities from environmental harm by advocating relocation of residents, prompting government agencies to clean up toxic sites, and promoting an understanding of environmental justice issues before policy makers and the public.
