The Call to Renewal: A Movement of Faith People for Social
Transformation
We have provided support to Sojourners for its important work in developing
an alternative faith-based voice to the Religious Right. The project, led by
Jim Wallis, is stimulating a new political conversation around a range of issues
which are deeply divisive in public life--such as race, poverty, welfare reform,
and abortion. The "Call to Renewal" is a network of diverse members,
including religious leaders, grassroots activists, congregations, and faith-based
social change agencies. The project's first annual conference, A National Forum
on Faith and Politics in Washington, DC, drew over 800 participants and front-page
coverage in The New York Times. The "Call to Renewal" is a
vigorous, alternative, progressive religious voice on public policy. It hopes
to contribute to a more civil, community-centered and compassionate moral climate
in the United States, especially towards the poor and marginalized; and a more
humane national dialogue on the role of religion and public life.
