July 1998 Coalition for Human Dignity
Seattle, WA
General Support
The Nathan Cummings Foundation has supported the efforts of the Coalition
for Human Dignity to combat hate-group activities on the far Right for the past
three years. The Coalition for Human Dignity works to promote greater cooperation
between diverse groups and to counter anti-Semitic, racist, homophobic and anti-immigrant
activities in the Pacific Northwest. Through their biweekly "Northwest
Update," quarterly magazine "The Dignity Report" and weekly radio
show "Boneheads and Bigots" the Coalition disseminates information
on regional anti-hate activities, provides "Backgrounder" reports
on right-wing and militia connections to centrist groups and politicians and
collects statistics on biased crime and violence in the region. They have provided
training on militia activities and hate-crimes to over 1,300 judges and law
enforcement officials in the region and their handbook on the militia movement
has been distributed to over 75,000 organizations in 27 states. Recently, the
Coalition has joined forces with the American Jewish Committee to produce and
disseminate a national report and resource directory on anti-immigrant activities
throughout the country. Through each of their activities, the Coalition seeks
to build a safer, more just world in which democratic practices can thrive and
flourish.
