The Nonprofit Sector Media Project

The nonprofit sector is a silent partner in every arena of American civic life. From health care to human rights to the arts, the sector has played a crucial role in shaping America's economy and current social structure. Yet its profound impact is rarely acknowledged and even less often understood. Tragically, the general public knows little about the sector's achievements of the struggles it faces in an age of dwindling public resources and growing corporate hegemony. With the aid of the Nathan Cummings Foundation, The American Prospect seeks to fill this crucial voice.

The American Prospect is a public policy journal devoted to providing accurate and timely information of the critical political, economic and social issues of today. With the support of a three-year Nathan Cummings Foundation grant, The American Prospect's Nonprofit Sector Media Project will provide the educated public, the media and the policy community with up-to-date information on sector development as well as blueprints for substantive social change. In the coming months, The American Prospect will regularly feature stories on the nonprofit sector. These stories will reach a larger audience through The American Prospect Syndicate, which proves condensed versions of news items for national dailies, The American Prospect web site and a series of press kit mailings to journalists throughout the nation. In addition, the Project will coordinate a series of author mini-tours and two national conferences to reach the academic community, elected officials and journalists in targeted cities nationwide. Through this concerted media effort, including paid radio and television advertising, The American Prospect will reach millions of Americans who have yet to consider the profound role that a vital nonprofit sector can play in shaping America's future.
