The Jewish Outreach Institute (JOI), established in 1988, is a national think
tank whose mission is to preserve the Jewish continuity of interfaith families
and to promote their inclusion in the Jewish community. Through conferences
and publications, JOI serves as a national network for Jewish outreach professionals,
stimulating their programming initiatives, and has helped foster the creation
of scores of Jewish outreach programs from coast to coast. JOI plays a pivotal
role helping intermarried families incorporate Jewish substance in their lives.
Their research has garnered national attention on the opportunities for including
the intermarried in the Jewish community.
The Nathan Cummings Foundation has supported JOI's "edu-tainment"
web site on the Internet, enabling them to connect with intermarried and unaffiliated
families across the country. We have done so to counter the lack of awareness
of programs to the intermarried, and to provide a low-threshold point of entrance
into and engagement with Jewish religious and cultural experiences. We hope
the work of the Jewish Outreach Institute will strengthen the ability of the
larger community to secure the Jewish commitment and affiliation of intermarried
families.
