General Support

The Progressive Jewish Alliance (PJA) expands the Jewish community’s practice of social justice through direct action, leadership development, community organizing and advocacy. The PJA is a new Los Angeles-based grassroots community group devoted to organizing the Jewish community to work with others in the pursuit of social and economic justice and to improving relations between Jews and non-Jews. Its projects include combating the proliferation of garment industry sweatshops in the Los Angeles area, advocating for a moratorium on the death penalty in California, promoting local living-wage standards, and facilitating local Jewish-Muslim dialogues. The PJA also produces educational materials for local high school and college students that integrate Judaism with the issues on which it is working. Over the past year, PJA has undergone a transformation from a volunteer-run organization to one with a full-time staff and an active and growing membership. The Jewish Life Program of the Nathan Cummings Foundation is a proud supporter of the PJA’s efforts and ambitious plans for continued organizational growth.
