Sidney Shapiro Tzedakah Award Presented to the Nathan Cummings Foundation and family

The Nathan Cummings Foundation and family awarded the 2003 Sidney Shapiro Tzedakah Award at the Jewish Funders International Conference in San Jose, CA.

The Sidney Shapiro Tzedakah Award is given each year at the Jewish Funders Network International Conference to honor a member who is engaged in the kind of Tzedakah exemplified by Sidney Shapiro, one of the founders of the Jewish Funders Network, in his grantmaking activities over the past decades. That kind of grantmaking is, among other things, creative, strategic, collaborative, innovative, forward-thinking, and responsive to real and pressing societal needs. It reflects both the meaning and the spirit of tzedakah (righteous giving); that is, it is done because it is required, but it is done with kindness of heart, generosity of spirit, and a commitment to justice.
